The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
