Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
