The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
